PRESS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF CATANIA
Nel corso dell'ultimo Shabbat del mese di ottobre 2022, il presidente della comunità ebraica di Washington con una folta delegazione di componenti della stessa comunità e Rabbi Herzfeld (rabbino capo di Washington), in uno alla famiglia Ledeen che ha curato i rapporti tra la comunità ebraica di Catania e quella di Washington, condurranno il loro Sefer Torà (la bibbia ebraica, che si legge all’interno delle sinagoghe durante la liturgia ebraica), che verrà donata alla nostra comunità.
L’evento, oltre a rivestire un’importanza religiosa fondamentale per ogni comunità ebraica, nel caso della nostra città e del meridione ebraico tutto, riveste un significato straordinario, perché riporta una bibbia ebraica all’interno di una Bet ha Knesset, dopo un’assenza di appena cinquecento anni.
Infatti in Sicilia esistevano ben 54 comunità ebraiche ben organizzate, che poi furono cacciate dai loro territori nel 1492 dall’editto di re Ferdinando II di Spagna, che non volle più ebrei sui suoi possedimenti, tra i quali, appunto la Sicilia.
La comunità di Washington, con tale dono lascerà nella Sicilia ebraica un segno indelebile di solidarietà e fratellanza che sarà ricordato e mai cancellato per il futuro ebraico di tutto il meridione d’Italia.
La delegazione sarà accolta in aeroporto nel giorno di mercoledì dalla comunità di Catania, ed i festeggiamenti per celebrare lo straordinario evento inizieranno il successivo giovedì, per avere poi termine la domenica mattina, dopo lo shabbaton, momento in cui la gradita delegazione farà rientro a Washington.
Agli eventi saranno presenti le massime autorità della città di Catania e della Regione Siciliana, oltre a tutta la deputazione dell’isola che volesse unirsi allo storico evento.
Ringraziamo per la sensibilità e l’amicizia fraterna dimostrata con tale evento tutta la famiglia Ledeen ed il nostro decano fondatore della comunità, prof. Michael Ledeen.

During the last Shabbat of October 2022, the president of the Jewish community of Washington with a large delegation of members of the same community and Rabbi Herzfeld (chief rabbi of Washington), in one of the Ledeen family who oversaw the relations between the Jewish community of Catania and that of Washington, will conduct their Sefer Torah (the Jewish bible that is read inside the synagogues in the course of Jewish Liturgy), which will be donated to our community.
The event, in addition to being of fundamental religious importance for every Jewish community, in the case of our city and the whole of the Jewish south, has an extraordinary significance, because it brings back a Jewish bible inside a Bet Ha Knesset, after absence of just five hundred years.
In fact, there were 54 well-organized Jewish communities in Sicily, which were then expelled from their territories in 1492 by the edict of King Ferdinand II of Spain, who no longer wanted Jews on his possessions, including Sicily.
With this gift, the community of Washington will leave an indelible mark of solidarity and brotherhood in Jewish Sicily that will be remembered and never canceled for the Jewish future of the whole of southern Italy.
The delegation will be welcomed at the airport on Wednesday by the community of Catania, and the celebrations to celebrate the extraordinary event will begin the following Thursday, and will then end on the Sunday morning following the Shabbat celebrations, at which time the welcome delegation will return to Washington.
The events will be attended by the highest authorities of the city of Catania and the Sicilian Region, as well as all the deputation of the island who would like to join the historic event.
